Warner Archives continues to release some rare gems for the hard to please fan. Latest among their new releases is The Gathering, a classic 1977 made-for-TV movie starring Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton, along with a great supporting cast. Also of note is that is it one of very few live action titles produced by Hanna Barberra.
If memory serves this used to be an annual staple of the holiday season, but to my recollection hasn’t been aired in many years and has been unavailable for quite a while. It was previously released on both laser disc and VHS, the latter of which was a very poor quality release. This release is sharp and clear and is much better than most in terms of video quality for the Archives series.
It’s a sappy story on the surface but isn’t in reality. Asner plays a man who over time has alienated his four (now grown) children and to a lesser extent his wife, played by Maureen Stapleton. Just prior to Christmas, he learns that he has terminal cancer and has weeks to live. He reconnects with her and gathers the family together for a reunion for the holiday, but without telling them of his illness.
It is a great example of the genre and is well executed so don’t be put off by your first impression of the plot. It’s not a chick flick but a heartfelt film of the passage of time and the effects it can have on the average family.
The package also includes a follow up film, The Gathering II which continues the story a few years after the original.
